Paul Coombes – Bio

I spent the majority of my working life pursuing a career in the Aviation Insurance Industry, and was very fortunate to travel extensively around the world looking after major airline clients, and making many good friends in the process.

When I retired at age 60, in 2006, and not wishing to play golf every day of the week, I looked for something completely different (law had always interested me) and I applied to become an Usher at the Chelmsford Crown Court where I spent a very interesting 2 years, learning a whole lot in the process. This fuelled my enthusiasm to become a Magistrate, and at the age of 65, I was sworn in at a very grand ceremony in the Council Chamber of County Hall Chelmsford on February 15th, 2011, and appointed to the North Essex Bench.

During the next 5 years in addition to Chelmsford, I often sat in the Court House in Colchester.  Then all of a sudden I was 70, and that was that, and by the time the law changed it was too late for me.

I joined the Magistrates’ Golfing Society in January 2013, following an introduction by Tony Brock, a colleague on the North Essex Bench.

At the AGM held at the House of Lords in November 2013, I was elected to the Committee, and 2 years later at the AGM in November 2015, it was proposed and agreed that as Janet Griffith was retiring as Hon. Secretary, after 23 years of service, I be appointed Hon. Secretary for the 2016 year.

Following Yvonne Potter’s retirement from the position of Hon. Treasurer, at the Executive Committee Meeting in July, 2018, I was subsequently appointed Hon. Treasurer, and have been performing both roles ever since.

In addition to being the focal point for communication with the Members, I work closely with the Captain, members of the Executive Committee and our Meeting Organisers in an endeavour to ensure that our Events are supported by as many Members as possible.
