1938 – 1964 H. Cairn Hogbin
Our founder Henry Cairn Hogbin, Liberal later Conservative politician, served as a Member of Parliament for Battersea North from December 6th, 1923 to October 29th, 1924. Henry was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the County of Middlesex in 1928, and was a keen amateur sportsman, playing cricket, tennis and golf.
September 1938 was a significant month in the lives of Magistrates in England. On September 30th, Neville Chamberlain returned to Croydon Airport and waved a piece of paper and declared “peace in our time”. Sadly, this didn’t last long as war was declared less than 12 months later.
What happened 9 days earlier on 21st September 1938, had greater longevity. Henry Cairn Hogbin J.P. saw the birth of his “brain-child”, a golfing society for Magistrates. In pouring rain at the now defunct Ranelagh GC at Barnes in South-West London he hit the first shot 246 yards down the fairway to his waiting Caddy, then holed his 2nd shot for an eagle. What a way to start, no wonder his Society still prospers today!
